Irregular Periods

What causes irregular periods?

Every woman is different — including their periods. Some happen like clockwork. Others are hit-or-miss and unpredictable. On average, a woman get their period every 24 to 38 days. A period usually lasts about 2 to 8 days. Is your period irregular — and if so, does it need treatment?

Causes of Irregular Periods

Many things can cause irregular periods. Changes in your body’s level of estrogen and progesterone hormones can disrupt your period’s normal pattern. That’s why young girls going through puberty and women approaching menopause commonly have irregular periods.

Other common causes of irregular periods include:

  • Having an intrauterine device (IUD)
  • Changing birth control pills or using certain medications
  • Too much exercise
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Stress
  • Thickening of or polyps on the uterine lining
  • Uterine fibroids

Treatment for irregular periods

There are many possible causes of irregular periods, and the appropriate treatment will depend on the underlying cause. Some possible causes of irregular periods include:

  • Hormonal imbalances: Hormonal imbalances can be caused by conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, and pituitary gland disorders. Treatment may include medications to regulate hormones or surgery to remove any underlying conditions.
  • Pregnancy: Pregnancy can cause irregular periods, and the treatment is typically to carry the pregnancy to term.
  • Menopause: Menopause is a natural process that occurs when a woman’s ovaries stop producing eggs, and it can cause irregular periods. Treatment may include hormone replacement therapy to manage symptoms.
  • Stress: Stress can disrupt the body’s normal hormonal balance and cause irregular periods. Treatment may include stress-reduction techniques such as exercise, relaxation, and counselling.
  • Other medical conditions: Other medical conditions such as uterine fibroids, endometriosis, and uterine polyps can cause irregular periods. Treatment may include medications or surgery to remove any underlying conditions.

It is important to consult with a healthcare provider to determine the cause of irregular periods and determine the appropriate treatment.
